With our work as Sabry Marouf, we have made no secret of the fact that we take many of our design cues from a long-distant past: the symbology and symbolism of Ancient Egypt provide us with constant inspiration and near endless depths of possibility. Our shared history is a bountiful, natural resource.
Still, when we are creating, we are working in the present day. The reverence that we hold for our heritage informs everything that we do, but so do the processes and possibilities afforded to us in the here and now.
What is perhaps most important, however, is that we do not see these two worlds as distinct. We do not separate the things which have come before from those which are happening before our eyes every day.
Time, in its way, is circular and -- in our way of thinking -- all of this is happening at once; it feels a strange and violent thing to rend these concepts from one another, when they are both so tangible to us.
It’s with this in mind, that we have created the Sabry Marouf journal.
A place for our thoughts to coalesce and crystalise, and a way for us to invite you to explore the world that we inhabit, beyond the end result of the artefacts which we create.
Our hope is that we can translate a sense of wonder, which is so intrinsic to our process, into words and images, for you to explore in your own ways.
